Remember, Remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason
Why gunpowder and treason
Should ever be forgot.

One day a year the historic town of Battle, East Sussex sheds its conservatism and feeds
the flames of ancient rebellion. Here, bonfire celebrations do not take the form of a few
friends with a couple of sparklers and baked potatoes in the garden, but are a year in the
preparation and cumulate in a fiery and explosive parade around the town. They include
reputedly the oldest guy in the world, a huge firework display and a ‘Normus Gurt’
bonfire, which attracts crowds of up to twenty thousand people.
Battle Bonfire has a four hundred year history which tales how celebrations of the
failure of the gunpowder plot evolved into today’s multi-organisational event. It
includes stories of the perpetual struggle to keep the event alive against a backdrop of
indifference and even downright opposition; of how a local creation was instrumental
in changing the law and how the devotion of a band of Bonfire Boyes means the event
has and still raises thousands of pounds for local charities.
